If you are new to acupuncture or visiting a Korean medicine clinic for the first time, it can help to know what information the doctor may need. Bring a list of current medicines, relevant diagnoses and any recent test results that relate to your concern.

You do not need to decide which treatment you want before the consultation. The first step is to explain what is bothering you and ask questions in a language you are comfortable using.

What to wear and bring

• Choose loose, comfortable clothing when possible.
• Eat a light meal beforehand unless your doctor has given different instructions.
• Bring identification and any insurance documents you may wish to ask about.
• Tell the doctor if you are pregnant, use blood-thinning medicine or have a bleeding disorder.

What may happen during the visit

A first visit usually begins with a private consultation and an individual assessment. The doctor may discuss acupuncture, cupping, herbal medicine or another approach when clinically appropriate. You should receive an explanation of the proposed care and expected fee before deciding whether to proceed.
